The Breville Juice Fountain

on

The Breville Juice Fountain Plus JE95xl juicer is an excellent mid-range priced pulp-ejecting centrifugal juicer.

The Breville Juice Fountain Plus JE95XL juicer is an extremely popular juice extractor. Its 850 watt motor is capable of spinning the centrifugal blade and filter basket up to 13,000 RPMs. This is easily enough to grind through even the most dense carrots and beets. Plus this juicer is actually a two-speed juicer. This is extremely valuable when juicing soft fruit and vegetables. Spinning the blades at a lower speed will help get a higher yield of juice from these softer produce rather than tossing them prematurely into the pulp bin.

Here are some of the highlights to this Breville juicer machine:
  • It is an excellent all around juicer that does well on fruits and vegetables. This is why it is one of the best selling juicers on the market for the general public. Some people feel it actually delivers a higher yield of juice than many more expensive juicers.
  • Breville has won several design awards so there is more thinking going into their kitchen appliances. One small example is the cord wrap-around guide in the base of the juicer. This is a small handy feature that I appreciate because I don't have anything like that on my Omega 8003 juicer. It is a nice plus for the JE95xl.
  • Many people feel these juice extractors are much quieter than the Jack Lalanne Power Juicer. I am not sure that is true. When on the high setting, the Breville can be loud. But I think the motor in this juice extractor is much smoother, stronger and higher quality than the Jack Lalanne Power Juicer Deluxe I have. So it might be a little louder but it is a better juicing machine. It is definitely more quiet than my Braun MP80 juicer which was one of the best rated inexpensive juicers available at the time.
  • The parts are easy to clean because the surfaces are rounded. There are no grooves and no rim on the basket for food to get stuck to. Plus the juicer is dishwasher safe except for the motor. You wipe down that part of the machine.
  • This is a better juicer for juicing soft fruits and vegetables and most produce overall than the Breville JE900. That older model juicer has been discontinued by Breville even though you can find some still available. The Breville JE900 doesn't have the variable speeds that the Juice Fountain Plus JE95xl has. Plus the JE900 is known to hit top speed so fast the juicer walks on the counter top. The JE95xl juicer ramps up to speed slowly so it never walks. It is a much nicer design overall and I would choose it over the JE900 even if the JE900 is at a discounted price.
  • There is a 1 year warranty on the Breville juicer's motor in the USA. That's not great but compared to the 90 day Jack Lalanne power juicer warranty, it is much better.
This list of items below might be considered small disadvantages to this vegetable and fruit juice extractor. However, many are very small cons if they are even negative at all.
  • Carrots stain the plastic juicer parts. However, carrots stain everything they darn near touch. So maybe that's not saying much. But some people think this is a drawback. If it is for you, look into a juicer with more stainless steel parts like the Breville Elite juicer. (This juicer is more high-end and can be compared to commercial juicers. Many people upgrade to this model because they want a stainless steel juicer instead of plastic.)
  • This juicer doesn't do tomatoes very well. In my opinion tomatoes are one of those items that are better eaten whole or blended rather than juiced. You will get more good stuff from a tomato by eating or blending it.
  • Like all centrifugal juicers, the Breville JE95xl juicer doesn't do wheatgrass juice. If you plan to do a lot of wheat grass and other leafy vegetables, get a Green Star juice extractor GS 3000 or something like an Omega 8005 or even a Solo Star II. These all use masticating or similar processes that work much better at squeezing juice from leafy greens than centrifugal juicers use.
  • For some people the size of this juicer might be a problem. It sits 12.5" x 8.5" x 16.5" high but does weigh under 10 pounds. This is less than half the 26 pounds a Champion Juicer weighs. However, the 16.5" high might be a concern for people with smaller kitchens and over-hanging cabinets.
  • Some people have had motor issues with this machine or the JE900. It is a little unclear which model they mean. I feel the issues arise because these people are overloading it. Just because it will take 5 carrots at a time doesn't mean you have to feed that many in. Even the best juice extractor cannot handle that kind of treatment. You will get better juice yield if the blades have less to deal with. And as far as putting a whole apple in, I wouldn't do that either. Apple seeds have tiny traces of cyanogenic acids. To play it safe I would remove the apple seeds because even though our bodies can de-toxify small amounts of cyanide, why push it? Remove the seeds, please.
So if you are looking for a solid all around juicer at a mid-range price, this Breville Juice Fountain Plus JE95xl juicer is an excellent choice. Chances are you'll end up being another one of the million or so people who have been happy they bought this machine.

Breville Ikon five speed juicer BJE510XL

on

The Breville Ikon five speed juicer BJE510 features a five speed control whereby a LCD screen display lets you know the speed you are at. And if this wasn't enough, it will also make suggestions as to what speed to use for different types of vegetables and fruit. This is a very helpful control to have on a centrifugal self-ejecting pulp juicer. You will get a much higher juice yield because you can slow the grinder speed to the type of fruit you are juicing. In comparison most centrifugal juicers cannot do this. This juicer has a 900 watt motor that is capable of speeds between 6,500 to 13,000 RPMs to help get the job done correctly.

You will not find any bad product reviews on the Breville Ikon five speed juicer BJE510 . At around the $200+ range everyone feels the juicer is more than worth that price.
Here are some other advantages to this Breville juice extractor:
  • Breville Ikon five speed juicer BJE510 juicer features a titanium blade that cuts through even dense vegetables like butter.
  • Cleaning is a breeze because it doesn't have nooks and crevices in and around the bowl. This is often a complaint with Juiceman, Jack Lalanne, Hamilton Beach and other centrifugal juicers. All the grooves and rims make cleaning them a pain but not with this Breville or any of the other Breville Juice Fountain juicers in their line. They have made a conscious effort in design to round all edges and cut your cleaning time. You may not think this is such a big deal but for me it is. My old Braun Mp80 has a rim on the inside of the basket that is a huge drag to clean. I have to deal with it every time I use that machine and it is a pain.
  • The feeder tube is larger than normal. It is actually 3 1/4" as compared to 3" which is the norm for big mouth juicer chutes. This larger tube helps keep produce prep time down to a minimum. Although I personally wouldn't pack the chute with fruit and vegetables as I doubt the juice yield is good when you do that. Let the juicer take its time and grind the vegetables at a comfortable rate of speed. Don't overtax it by loading it down with too much stuff to grind up.
  • The cutter blades are simple to remove unlike the Jack Lalanne juicers which require more steps to take apart and put together.
  • For a centrifugal juicer it's relatively quiet. Breville Ikon five speed juicer BJE510 does a good job of making centrifugal juicers that are quieter than the other juicers on the market. Most juicers of this type sound like jet engines. The Breville juicers are less loud than most blenders.
I can only see two disadvantages to this juicer if they can even be called that.
  • The first disadvantage might be to the physical size of this juicer. It's tall at 19.5" high. So it will need some headroom which many smaller kitchens may not have. It also weighs 17 pounds which some people feel is heavy but not really if you consider it needs to be heavy enough to be sturdy at that height.
  • Some people feel the customer service for Breville Ikon five speed juicer BJE510 is top-notch. Others disagree and say it is lacking. Having been in customer service a number of years I choose to believe some people are just difficult and no matter what you do, you cannot please them. And the more things get messed up and the person gets upset, the harder it is to make things right. So this may be a moot point.
In conclusion because this juicer has the added 5 speed feature along with all the other fine design Breville has put into it, I feel this Breville Ikon five speed juicer BJE510 would be an excellent enhancement to anyone's life who is looking to improve their health and get the most out of their produce dollars. It will be hard to find another centrifugal juicer outside Breville Ikon five speed juicer BJE510 line that does as good a job as this juicer does.

Breville BJE510XL is a well designed machine

on

The Breville BJE510XL Ikon 900-Watt Variable-Speed Juice Extractor is the third juicer I've owned, and is definitely my favorite. My cheap and easy-to-use Juiceman's motor burnt out after a year, at which point it would have been more expensive to repair than replace. My Champion still works after 15 years and is not difficult to clean, but is messy to use, leaving drips all over the countertop or whatever I line it with. I've also tried the Green Star and Green Power Juicers, which make perfect juice with dry pulp, but take a long time to clean and assemble. The Breville BJE510XL Ikon 900 is the second-down from the top of the line of the four Breville juicers (only the Elite is better), but after a month of use of about every-other-day use, I find no need to upgrade.

Here's why I like this juicer so much for my typical juice of carrot, kale, celery and apple and/or pear:

*Easy to set-up: The Breville BJE510XL takes only seconds to set up this juicer. The juicer itself has only 3 pieces to snap into place, plus there's the acrylic pitcher, pulp basket, and pusher. The pieces fit perfectly like a jigsaw puzzle, which brings me to the second reason I like it:

*Not messy: The Breville BJE510XL  juicer  ends up in the pitcher, the pulp goes to the pulp basket, plus some residual of each ends up in the juicer to be cleaned. My Champion Juicer OTOH required me to find containers around the house that would fit, and still some would drip out. I would have to place a baking sheet or towel under it to contain the mess.

*Quick vegetable and fruit prep: I can fit several carrots at once into the 3" diameter shoot, plus whole pears and/or apples. I don't have to do as much cutting ahead of time as I did with other juicers with a narrower shoot. You must be careful though to use the pusher and not your hand.

*Quick clean up: Those 6 pieces mentioned above are all I have to clean. I can clean my juicer in just a few minutes, once I figured out a good way to clean the filtration basket--by far the most challenging part to clean. This basket was frustrating to clean at first, particularly since my juicer did not come with the brush it was supposed to (and customer service did not respond to my request to obtain a brush). I tried various brushes, but what works best is an all purpose nylon scouring pad from Trader Joe's which comes in packages of 4 for $2.59. The secret to quick clean up is to begin cleaning as soon as you've finished juicing, although you do have a few minutes to drink your juice first. Rinse off the filtration basket and vigorously scrub half of each of the three sections at a time with the nylon scrubber, rinsing each half section before moving on to the next. This should remove 90 to 90% of the pulp debris. Repeat or spot clean to remove the rest. I can clean the whole basket in less than a minute. The other parts are quick and straightforward to clean, although you have to be careful to clean under the rim of the acrylic part that the basket sits in.

*Helpful design features: The Breville BJE510XL juicer has a smaller footprint than the Champion and Greenstar Juicers; a sleek, modern look that looks good in kitchens; pieces that fit together well (as mentioned), and even the plug is in the shape of a ring so one can easily pull it out of the socket without yanking on the cord.

*Doesn't stain. Although The Breville BJE510XLhas some acrylic parts, so far, with immediate cleaning after use, there have been no stains.

A few compromises. No juicer is perfect. This juicer is average in several areas. You can have a juicer that is above average in these areas (Green Star and Green Power), but you will be spending a lot more time in assembly, disassembly and cleaning. Having used the Green Star and Green Power, I would rather have the quick and easy juicer and sacrifice a small amount of yield.

*Noise - This juicer is as loud as your average kitchen appliance like a food processor or blender. The Green Star or Green Power are whisper quiet. It is not as loud as my Blendtec blender which requires me to wear ear phones.

*Yield - The pulp in this The Breville BJE510XL  is neither very wet nor very dry--it's average. For sawdust-dry pulp and more yield, the Green Star, Green Power and the $2,000 difficult-to-clean Norwalk exceed the Breville.

*Versatility - The Breville BJE510XL is strictly a juicer. If you're a raw foodist who is interested in making frozen banana "ice cream" and "not tuna" pate', you might prefer the Champion, Green Star or Green Power. However, I have found you can make these items in the food processor, so I'd rather have the dedicated easy juicer. Banana "ice cream" takes about 5 minutes in the food processor, as opposed to about 30 seconds in the Champion juicer.

The bottom line is that the right juicer for you is the one that can get used. With quick and easy food prep, assembly, disassembly, and cleaning, at my house, this IS the juicer that gets used.
